( A Re-intruduction):..............Due to some orthopedic problems and related issues, I have not been on this forum for a long time. I was glad to find it today and realized there have been some changes.....it appears "all the changes have been of a positive nature".
In December, "Benny" my 13 1/2 yr old French Brittany passed away in his sleep one night....had not been ill, just "Father Time" doing his thing. So, now it's just "Rex" (American Brittany) (4 1/2 yrs) and I doing "our thing": some slow and leasurely upland hunting up here in MT in Sept and Oct and a little AZ quail hunting when this "old weather wimp" gets out of here in Dec and Jan. I make no excuses.......approaching the tail end of my 8th decade, I feel "I've paid my dues"! (and my 55 yr old daughter agrees).
I would like to say "Thanks" again for all the good advice I received (back in 2006 and 2007)from many of you when I posted many questions related to my introduction into the "world of Britts". The "puppy" seminiar I attended in July (2006) (in "I think" BigFork, MT.,--maybe Whitefish) of 2006, was extremely helpful in many ways for me and my (then) 5 month old Brittany puppy. After having had several Labs from 1960 to 1993.....and then a 13 yr period with no dogs....my life was again more complete with the addition of "Brittany Companionship"
Some conclusions I have come-to, since acquiring "Rex" the day he turned 7 weeks: Patience, consistancy, repetition and developing the ability to "read-your-dog" under many different cirumstances, are "key" to having your dog develope into a well-trained & obedient companion AND an efficient hunting dog. With no intentions to use him a stud, I had him neutered at 11 months; I never let him out to: work, play or hunt, that the Dogtra 2002 T&B collar is not always on his neck. I have adapted the Silent Command system of the Smith's with my own utilization of the T&B collar, and have a dog that now fulfills "MY particular requirements" and my system "Works-for-ME".
Other things I believe in: He ALWAYS travels in the "Dog Crate" and sleeps in it at night....both on the road and when at home. I feed him twice/day: 7am & 5 pm..3/4 cup at each feeding.....Best food I can buy......a blend of all natural fish and sweet potatoe mix along with other "goodies in the formulation. Through blood test(s) a years ago, it was determined he was allergic to: wheat; peas; corn and Lamb......thus the change to the "Fish & Sweet Potatoe" formula. It's working out very well. No itching; good coat; maintains weight; small firm stools and loves the food.
Perhaps maybe this fall (Late Oct/Nov) I can finally get around to attending Jim's "NI". I know it would be well worth the effort to attend. By coincidence, I will be returning to Montana in late Oct, after attending my "60th High School Reunion"in far northern Illinois. Should be able to route back through Kansas with no problem. (JIM>>>>PLEASE ADVISE WHEN YOU HAVE SET THE DATES))
A safe and pleasant summer to all........"CARPE DIEM!"

I enjoyed your post. I'm new to this forum; however, I share your enthusiasm and actually part of your story parallels mine. I to have much to be thankful for with all the help and insights into raising and training my new Brittany pup; now 11 wks old. We leave tommorow for a 3,000 mile cross country trip and he also rides and sleeps in the crate.
Jan, 2009 I had lung surgery and 5 more times on the table up to Feb 2010. Today I work out 1 hour a day in the gym; run 3 companies; and enjoy all the prospects of hunting again with my new pal; Gus. At the age of almost 67 I don't take things for granted; much like yourself.
Welcome back. |

.....Jay..... Thank you for your response. Yes, the folks on this forum are an understanding and helpful group of people. Regarding your multiple visits "On The Table" and your current regiment: (A)...favorite quote: "You haven't lived....until you've almost died". (B) I compliment you on your attitude and forward thinking.
Regarding your pup and the 3000 mile trip: I'm sure you have done this, but I'll mention it anyway: Is your pup "Microchipped?". God forbid he ever gets away from you in infamiliar surroundings.
Also, I carry about 3 to 4 gallons of "drinking water" for the dog from my own source at home. I have a well, and my dog is used to that taste.....he does not like the taste of "City water" and will refuse to drink it.
As you do, I also leave the SUV locked & running with the AC on when the circumstances warrant doing that. I also put "The Club" on the steering wheel and have extra keys in my pocket.
My Britt has traveled over 54,000 miles with me in his crate in a little over 4 years and has never been a problem.
And lastly, I wish you a safe and enjoyable trip .....God speed!
P.S. Have spent a lot of enjoyable time in your state......My late wife and I used to spend about 3 months at Port Aransas every winter from 1996 to 2004. Also, had an unfortunate auto crash just outside of Whitewright, TX in March 2004......blew a tire and hit a RR underpass....no serious injuries, but did $16,500 damage to a 2002 SUV. The Whitewright chief of police and others were EXTREMELY helpful and courteous.....wonderful folks.

Hello again; it's 10:30 pm and ready for bed before the big trip; just checked the posts one last time.
Our farm was about 4 miles from that RR overpass that you hit at Whitewright. Our address than was a Bells, Tx Address. We sold the farm, cattle, horses, etc after the surgery. Built a new home on the edge of Denison 10 miles in. I can't believe we were that close to your accident. Glad that turned out ok.
See everyone in 12 to 15 days.

Hey Griz,
I haven't seen Jim post on here lately but I know he is on Facebook fairly often. You might try to hook up with him there to get the early skinny on the NI.

Kevin....Thank you for the heads up on Jim........Oh, while I got you on the line, a couple of questions: 1/ Is the KS daily limit on Roosters still 4/day? 2/ Does it still open sometime in the first week of November?
Thanks again............Don (Montana Griz) |
