Quail Wing

I had purchased two quail wings. I attached one to a fishing pole (like in the DVD) and taped the other to a new canvas dummy. Last night I introduced Gus to the fish pole wing. Within a few sweeps of the fishing pole Gus locked up solid. I quit and put it up.
This morning out in the big field. I got the fishing pole out again and after two sweeps he locked up. I put it up.
I had Rhonda (my wife) go down the field about 200 yards and lay the dummy (with quail wing taped to it) in some tall grass. It was attached to about 50 feet of cord on a reel. As Gus found it, locked up and than jumped it she started reeling him into her with the dummy in his mouth.
He stopped twice to chew at it but did pick it back up and carry it to her.
Gus has never been a top hand retriever with much of anything. He'd rather do keep away.
Question: can we use the dummy with the taped wing to get him more interested in retrieving? (at least we can reel it in to us)

I've had my chain gang ready for some time but waited till Gus was alittle older to start him on it. This is Gus's 14th week. He's grown alot (all legs) and he's a hand full at times. He's demanding of my attention even though I don't talk words at him. He's all about getting in the truck or getting into a open field. (and the house at night).
I put him on the chain gang yesterday morning when it was cool and shaded and left him for about 15 mins. I stood back and watched him throw a big time fit. He tried to bite the chain, jumped, bucked, and darn near jerked his own neck off.
The first time he sat still and didn't bark for better than 1 min I released him.
Today was day two; 20 mins throw fits off and on but ended up quiet after 15 mins. I took him off at 20 min period of time.
Question: How long should they be on; how many times a week???? I watch the DVD and can't seem to locate the exact time frame Jay thanks in advance for the help

In Delmar's DVD (Training Gun Dogs with Delmar Smith) he's wearing a couple of whistles around his neck but never once is any training involved using these whistles. Why the whistles or do I need to buy additional DVD's to find the answer?

Five-month-old Lab. We've been working on the CL/CC for about two weeks with some fun time retreiving/happy timing thrown in. I expect he will be used for waterfowl primarily. I have been pulling up on the CL while pushing his butt down to cue him to sit. I can move the length of the CC in front of him and he'll stay sitting for a few moments--still work to do there. I then cue him to come to me.
Should I put him on the WP or is it too soon? With my setter, I used a raised arm as a cue to stop. I taught it on the WP. I can see some benefit in a similar cue for this Lab, especially if he needs to be handled in the field. Any advice?

Rhonda and I were eating at the table and saw that Gus was locked up big time in the back yard. Next thing we know we snatched a hummerbird out of the air. The bird was injured and Gus decided to carry his prize around and brag about it. You can forget the whistle or "Gus, here to me." Never happen he just keep his distance until the bird died and he was tired of playing with it.
Should I laugh or cry? If it had been a training session I would have had control over the bird and the dog; not this time.
I would have never believed a pup could snatch a hummerbird out of the air. LOL LOL

How much distance should there be from the stake to the first dog. During the video, I believe it was stated that the dogs should be 6 feet apart, but was not sure if they should also be 6 feet from stake.
Thanks in advance for the help

Does anyone have a list of materials needed to assemble the retrieving table that Rick and Ronnie use in the videos and seminars?
Thanks,

Gus runs in a 100 x 200 fenced in back yard when not in training or in his crate. We live inside the city limits but have 356 ac behind our house and 400 ac in front. We only have a couple of new homes on both sides. Our back yard is full of oak trees and bare ground with some thin tall grass and a ditch; the yard grass is closer to the house.
I called Gus in for his evening meal and discovered he had been bitten on the side of the face. Eye was swollen and his ear was big time puffed and tender. He didn't act bad; eat supper like a tropper and drank plenty of water. Afterward he played with his rubber duck on the floor in front of the TV; apparently ok.
I took him to the VET first light this morning. He gave him benadryl and charged me 10 cents for the pill. Said he looked find and anything could have got him; snake, wasp, stinging scorpion, and/or a bee. He certainly could not tell for sure.
My vet hunts so he told me next time I was in the field carry some Benadryl pills along just in case he gets nailed again. Frankly, I'd never heard of that treatment.
Gus was also due for his third set of shots today so we got that done too.
Just thought I'd share.

Just discovered this site and asked the same question in the Members Only forum ( sort of confusing) but here's my questions - is a 9 month old Weimeraner too old to begin training ( years ago the old school philosophy was you had to start at 3 months) and also, what books, video's , etc. should I purchase given the dogs late start. Again, do I buy the materials from Rick or Delmar? sort of confusing. I would like a systematic system in chronilogical order to train this juvenile Weimer in the most efficient and successful manner. Thanks.
